When it comes to filing your taxes online, TurboTax is by far one of the best tax software available.
I know this because I’ve been using them for the last 9 years – both for personal and business taxes.
Along the way, I’ve asked a bunch of questions and found a lot of good answers about how to use TurboTax better and what to expect. Here are some of the top TurboTax questions I’ve heard and answers to go along with them.
How Much Does TurboTax Cost?
Filing a simple return using Federal Free Edition is, you guessed it, free. TurboTax does charge based on the complexity of your return and does a good job guiding you to the best product based on your actual needs.
For example, if you own a home and have children or dependents, TurboTax Deluxe would be a recommended product based on the recommendations of TurboTax. The price breakdowns are listed on the product page, but you can expect to pay anywhere from $0 for the simple Federal Free Edition to $104.99 for the Home and Business Edition.
Based on the figures shared in October 2015, the price for the family of TurboTax products are as follows:
- $0 – Federal Free Edition
- $54.99 TurboTax Deluxe
- $79.99 TurboTax Premier
- $104.99 TurboTax Home & Business
*These prices are subject to change at any point – but be sure to read our suggestions on how to get a discount in 2016.

Which Version of TurboTax Do I Need?
If you’re not sure which version of TurboTax you need, that’s not a problem. They guide you through very specific questions to figure out which version is right for you. Obviously if you don’t own a business or have rental properties, you probably won’t need the most expensive version of TurboTax. For the everyday student, married couple, and homeowner, the Deluxe version might be the highest option that you need.
What TurboTax Promotions are Available for 2016?
We recently published a list of TurboTax discounts that include over 15 ways you can get a discount. These same promotions are going on in 2016. Most of the companies will offer a flat $20 discount, while some places offer a percentage off. So, depending on the version you go with, you might be better off with the percent off if you decide on using a higher priced product.
Is Free Online Tax Filing Safe?
Yes. TurboTax uses bank-level encryption so that your information is kept safe as it is sent to the IRS and State agencies. Without getting super technical, they use multiple levels of security layers using TLS (Transport Layer Security) in order to encrypt your data and secure the privacy of your information.
Is TurboTax Free Edition Still Available?
Yes it is! Depending on the promotion, you might also get a heavy discount on the state version, so filing your taxes online in 2016 should be really affordable.
